This is a quick introduction to the "Oz basics" which are different from regular Half-Life or valve games. The biggest differences are the Offhand Grappling HOOK and the power-up RUNES.
The Offhand Grappling Hook:
One of the best features in Oz is the Offhand Grappling Hook. With practice, you can practically "fly" through the maps. The"gauss-jump" loses a lot of its appeal when you can fly!

To bind your hook: Pick a handy but unused key. Personally, I use the "C" key but you can use any key you want. While in the game, open the console with the "~" key, located next to the "1" key. Type the following:

bind x +hook

where "x" is the key you wish to use. Press the <Enter> key, and then close the console with the "~" key again.

The Hook will attach to whichever spot is lined up in your crosshairs. Point the crosshairs at a wall or pole or the sky or any stationary object and hold down the key you have just assigned. When it makes contact, you should hear a "click" sound and then you will be pulled to that spot. You will remain hooked until you release the key. Also, you can try releasing the hook before you get to the contact point and then re-hooking further on down. By repeating this action you can, as I said, practically fly through the map.

The hook can also be used as a weapon, although not a very powerful one. Point at an opponent and press the hook key. It will only do minor damage, but will drop his health and/or armor so he is easier to kill with other means. Also can be used when you run out of ammo in your weapons. One sure way to increase the power of the hook dramatically is to pick up the Super Hook Rune. When you have this rune, the hook flies faster, pulls you faster, and does major damage when used as a weapon. And this brings me to the other topic, that of Runes.

Runes:
The power-up Runes are another feature of the Oz Mod. They give increased power or additional abilities, depending on the one you have. For pictures and descriptions of the different runes, see this link of information from Terra Michele of LDR Clan and then use your "BACK" button to return. You only have one rune at a time. Two more keys assist in using the runes to your best advantage. Pick two more unused keys and, using the same method as with the hook, bind them with the following:

bind y runestatus---------------bind z droprune-----------of course using the keys you have selected in place of "y" and "z"

With the "runestatus" key, you can find out which rune you presently have. The "droprune" key will allow you to drop your current rune so you can pick up a different one. You will develop a preference for certain runes for different situations, so try them all out instead of just settling on a couple to start with. As with all Oz servers, the Server Administrator has a lot of control over the options, so all runes may not be available in all servers.

Rhobots:
The bots that are used in Oz are called "Rhobots", developed by Eric Bieschke. They provide able opponents when no one else is around to play, and they add to the action when there are only a few players in the server. "Starbreaker" has done a lot of work on modifying the Rhobots for use in the Oz Mod, and he is still making other changes soon to come, as well as updating and changing the Oz Mod itself. Recent changes include the ability of the Server Admin to enable an auto-adjusting skill level so the bots will get stronger if there are strong players in the server, or decrease their skill level if there is a preponderance of "noobs" playing. Changes soon to come will include an auto-kick function that will remove bots from the game if the server fills up, making more room for players. The Rhobots have the ability to "learn" to some degree, and the more they play a map the better they will be in that map.
